Lodsys files lawsuits against app developers

Rob Beschizza at 2:16 PM Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Lodsys has followed through on its threat to file lawsuits against iOS app developers who used certain features of Apple's development platform. Apple claims its own license covers devs; Lodsys disagrees in a new statement of its own. In any case, it had already described a strategy of attacking small businesses that cannot afford legal representation, forcing them into the relatively inexpensive option of paying licensing fees.

Politics + science = fun

Maggie Koerth-Baker at 11:13 AM Tuesday, May 31, 2011

Just because science sounds silly doesn't mean it's worthless. MSNBC's Alan Boyle breaks down recent political attempts to attack the National Science Foundation. TL;DR: Yes, the jello wrestling at an Antarctic research station was a mistake, but funding a towel-folding robot is actually important and not really a major drain on the federal budget.

This Is Not The End

Allright, as previously noted there’s going to be no new content here on the celebrated Matthew Yglesias blog until Tuesday morning when you’ll see an All New Redesign of not just this blog, but the entire (and growing) ThinkProgress family of hypertext products:

Enjoy Memorial Day. I’ll be in New York not blogging. It occurs to me that it’s probably been eight years since I’ve gone that long without writing a post, so there’s some chance of maniacal tweeting or something.

Gaga's Oprah Moment

Gaga's Oprah Moment

Ramin Setoodeh

The lady?s hotter than ever, but not because of her music: She?s become an evangelist of self-acceptance, preaching to an audience of outcasts. Ramin Setoodeh, on the real power of Gaga?s stardom, in this week?s Newsweek.

Lady Gaga has taken a lot of heat lately for ?borrowing? Madonna?s express-yourself-like-a-virgin shtick. But maybe the person who really should be crying ?plagiarism? is Oprah Winfrey. ?Be yourself and love who you are and be proud, because you were born this way,? Oprah told fans during her swan song last week. Oh, wait, Oprah didn?t say that. It was Lady Gaga on The View, confessing how she?d been bullied in high school for her big nose and buck teeth. ?Getting picked on in school, it sticks with you for life,? she said.

Article - Setoodeh Lady GagaLady Gaga photographed by Christopher Anderson for Newsweek & The Daily Beast

To understand why Gaga?s new album Born This Way is a huge hit despite some pretty lousy reviews, don?t listen to her songs (besides, Madonna sang them better). Listen to her sermons. ?I didn?t used to be brave. Tonight, I want you to forget all your insecurities,? she urged her flock at a recent concert in Cleveland. ?I want you to reject anyone who didn?t make you feel accepted. Maybe you felt misunderstood?? Gaga went on and on like this between sets, sans music and backup dancers, to the cheers and ululations of the ?Little Monsters,? as she calls her fans.

Gaga doesn?t give her audience free cars or reading recommendations, but she does dole out pop psychology to the Glee generation as freely as Oprah did to middle-aged moms and underemployed dads. The Little Monsters lap it up, following her every move on Twitter (she?s got more followers than anyone on the planet) and showering her with fan mail that looks like something spilled on Oprah?s couch: ?Dear Mother Monster,? begins one from Ashleigh Hill of Zanesville, Ohio. ?I?m only 19 and I am helping raise two kids that are not even mine. I know I?m doing the right thing, but my family is always on me that I need to go back to college and get a real job.? Tiffany Dysart, 22, one of the minions at Gaga?s Ohio concert, says the 25-year-old pop star ?empowers me. I?ve talked to young fans who go through self-mutilation, depression, eating disorders, image problems, bullying, and coming out. They say, ?Gaga helped me come out.??

Gaga doesn?t give her audience free cars or reading recommendations, but she does dole out pop psychology to the Glee generation as freely as Oprah did to middle-aged moms and underemployed dads.

Gaga understands what it?s like to be an outcast, or at least an awkward teenager. When she was still just Stefani Germanotta from Manhattan, her Catholic-school classmates thought she was so weird that they once threw her in a trash can. As her pal Justin Tranter of the band Semi Precious Weapons explains: ?Girls would ask her, ?Why do you get so dressed up and spend so much time on makeup? What, are you a lesbian?? ? (The answer: No. It just takes a lot of time to stitch meat into a dress and make a telephone hat.)

?With her incredible creativity, she is lighting people?s hearts and giving them strength to go on in these turbulent times,? says her friend Yoko Ono. Or, as Gaga ministered to her fans recently: ?Connect, embrace, liberate, love somebody,? No, wait, Oprah said that.

After Voting To Slash Funding For The EPA, Rep. Barletta Now Outraged It?s Not Doing More In His District

May 27th, 2011 at 2:22 PM by Marie Diamond

Three months after voting to eliminate funding for the Environmental Protection Agency, Rep. Lou Barletta (R-PA) now says he?s outraged that the EPA isn?t doing more to protect the health of residents in his district. Barletta isinsisting that the agency pay special attention to an area in Pittson, PA, after one resident alleged that a tunnel near a Superfund site gave him cancer. The EPA held an open house and information session to address the concerns of residents in the area, but said it did not plan to conduct further testing. This outraged Barletta, who called their decision ?unacceptable?:

On Wednesday, Barletta sent a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson asking the agency to perform additional testing in the Carroll/Mill Street neighborhood.[...]?Frankly, this is unacceptable. The EPA?s own Web site indicates that one of the agency?s primary reasons for existence is to ensure that ?all Americans are protected from significant risks to human health and the environment where they live, learn and work.??[...]

?I was surprised to hear an EPA official basically tell the residents of the Carroll/Mill neighborhood that they would not conduct soil and water testing to find answers. It is absolutely the EPA?s job, and I?m going to make sure that job is done. The residents are scared, and they deserve answers and peace of mind.?

That?s an ironic position for Barletta, considering how often he?s tried to prevent the EPA from doing its job. In February, Barletta voted with the rest of the Republican-controlled House for an amendment that slashed funding for the EPA. Republicans were retaliating against the agency for its efforts to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions. Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX), one of the authors of the amendment, said, ?The era of EPA overstepping its authority by imposing over-burdensome and unnecessary regulations at the expense of American businesses is over.?

Barletta?s vote to gut funding for the EPA flew in the face of popular opinion in his own district. A survey by Public Policy Polling found that 70 percent of voters in Barletta?s 11th Congressional District opposed Barletta?s vote to block the EPA from setting limits for carbon dioxide pollution. Those opposed included 58 percent of independents and 53 percent of Republicans. Voters also opposed Barletta?s votes to ?prevent the EPA from reducing arsenic, mercury and other toxic pollution from cement kilns, or from collecting any data about carbon and other pollutants.?

It?s pretty audacious to attack an agency for not doing enough mere months after attacking them for doing too much. Barletta should hope his constituents have short memories and forget his attempts to stop the EPA fromupholding health standards that Republicans insisted were a ?burden? to business.

PBS hacked in retribution for Frontline Wikileaks episode

Xeni Jardin at 10:27 PM Sunday, May 29, 2011

y07HO.png

Screen-shot-2011-05-29-at-10.31.jpg

The PBS.org website, and data associated with the PBS television network, its programs, and its affiliate stations, appear to have just been hacked by an entity calling itself LulzSec (or "The Lulz Boat"). The hack was made public around 1130pm ET, Sunday, May 29, and included cracking the PBS server, posting a bogus news story and some defacements, and publishing what appear to be thousands of passwords.

The information compromised and published included network, server, and database details and logins, as well as user login data for some PBS staff and contractors. As of 3:24am ET Monday, some defacements are still live on pbs.org.

Screen-shot-2011-05-29-at-10.51.jpg

The group that carried out the hack claims they are not affiliated with "Anonymous", and that the action is retribution for the recent "Wikisecrets" episode on Wikileaks, which was perceived by Wikileaks and its supporters to be unfair to Wikileaks.

According to an article in the Australian edition of IT security publication SC Magazine, LulzSec has gone after other media entities in recent weeks: Fox News Network and the TV show X-Factor are reported as prior targets. As the name implies, LulzSec would appear to be in it for the proverbial lulz, rather than, say, financial gain.

A statement from LulzSec:

Greetings, Internets. We just finished watching WikiSecrets and were less than impressed. We decided to sail our Lulz Boat over to the PBS servers for further... perusing. As you should know by now, not even that fancy-ass fortress from the third shitty Pirates of the Caribbean movie (first one was better!) can withhold our barrage of chaos and lulz. Anyway, unnecessary sequels aside... wait, actually: second and third Matrix movies sucked too! Anyway, say hello to the insides of the PBS servers, folks. They best watch where they're sailing next time.
The PBS program Frontline (and specifically the producers of the "Wikisecrets" episode), may have been the stated target, but the scope of intrusion was significantly more broad. And the Frontline site and its "Wikisecrets" subsite don't show any signs of a hack at all.

LulzSec posted an overview of the data and defacements here.

Xb.png Here's a cache of the fake "Tupac still alive in New Zealand" story the intruders posted. Unfortunately, Tupac remains dead, and PBS NewsHour social media and online engagement point person Teresa Gorman spent Sunday night on Twitter repeating this fact to dozens of incredulous individuals and news organizations [partial screengrab of @gteresa's Twitter feed here].

Here's a copy of the "Free Bradley Manning" defacement page LulzSec posted, featuring the "nyan cat" meme.

Below, a screengrab of @LulzSec's Twitter timeline documenting the attack. Click for full size.

lulzsec.jpg

UPDATE, 2:34am ET Monday: A new defacement just popped up here, implying @lulzsec still has access and control.

UPDATE, 3:50am ET: Wired story here, New York Times story here.

Court forces Twitter to expose anonymous government critic

Rob Beschizza at 8:05 AM Sunday, May 29, 2011

According to The Guardian, a California court has forced Twitter to hand over personal details of an account-holder who criticized local government officials in Tyneside, England. There is some confusion today due to The Telegraph inarticulately tying this libel case, fought in U.S courts, to an forthcoming privacy case in the U.K., where footballer Ryan Giggs' superinjuncted penis was exposed on Twitter.

Poll: Americans Don?t Approve Of Ryan?s Plan For Medicaid, Either

On Tuesday, New Yorkers in the state?s 26th Congressional District delivered House Republicans a clear message that House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan?s (R-WI) plan to end Medicare won?t fly. But a new poll shows that the American public?s distaste for Ryan?s proposal doesn?t stop at Medicare. According to a new Kaiser Family Foundation poll, 60 percent of those polled prefer the keep Medicaid ? the federal heath insurance system for the poor ? ?as is,? as opposed to Ryan?s detrimental block grant program. Indeed, more than half want to see no reductions in Medicaid spending at all because of ?a strong sense of the program?s importance.? Indeed, many said they had benefited or knew people who had benefited from the program directly:

Support for maintaining the current program may be due at least in part to the public?s personal connections to Medicaid and a strong sense of the program?s importance. About half of Americans say they or a friend or family member has received Medicaid assistance at some point, and a similar share say the program is important to their family.

Even those who initially supported Ryan?s Medicaid block grant idea said the Democratic position could sway them into maintaining Medicaid as it is. As The Huffington Post?s Emily Swanson notes, ?The survey suggests the Republican Party might make some inroads in changing public opinion, but likely not enough to attain majority backing.? Overall, the Kaiser poll verified previous polls? findings that general cuts to vital entitlement programs like Medicaid and Medicare to reduce the deficit is an agenda deeply out of line with the American public.
